What is Mount Hiei?

Mount Hiei, or also known as the sacred mountain of Kyoto. Mount Hiei is home to many myths and legends. One of them is the story of the marathon monks. They attempt to complete kaihogyo, which is a 1,000-day marathon (84km per day) to reach enlightenment. In the traditional Shinto folklore it was originally thought to be the home of gods and demons.

There are a few ways to go up this legendary mountain. By car, by hiking up the mountain or the Sakamoto cable car. If its by hike, it will be a 3 hours scenic adventure from Kyoto’s Shugakuin station.

If by cable car, do note that it is run by different companies. I would advice you to buy single tickets instead of round trips. Also, be aware that the Eizan cable car and ropeway do not run during the winter.

To those who stay at Hoshino Resorts l’Hotel De Hiei they provide a shuttle bus from Kyoto station. The hotel shuttle buses are all located at Kyoto station west exit near Hoshinoya coffee and Mcdonald. Infront of all the baggage lockers. The bus ride itself is about 35mins. Once reached you will be pleasantly greeted by their staff who will walk out in a small group, how cute!
